What is the best way to clean it
I mean should I take it apart?

I have a gun cleaning kit with the solvent and Brushes. Is that what i should use?

Thanks Guys!

Re: rusty gun

I cold blued my first gun this past spring....turned out a lot nicer than I thought it would.

A neighbor gave me a Mossberg pump that was in a flooded basement - you could not even operate the slide due to so much rust on the magazine tube.

I steel-wooled all the parts down to bare metal - washed it all in the hot water of the kitchen sink......applied the cold bluing solution.....several light steel wools....several cold blues.....one last light steel wooling - washed in water.....oiled it up and put it back together.

Cost $8.

Looks beautiful. Not as dark/deep as factory...more of a blue/gray finish...but uniform and beautiful.

This is the only repair for a rusted gun = reblue.

I'll see if I can find a picture.

That's what I'd do. You'll be happy and proud of your refinish job.....nothing like doing it yourself.

I got a Rem 870 from my brother. Had been in a fire and rusted bad. I steel wooled it then duracoated everything a tactical green. Came out really good.

Winchester 12 gauge the same, only in hk black.

Sure it does. I took apart and cleaned everything right down to the firing pin. Then gun is now just like new - except for the bluing in now blue/gray...not a black/blue.

I think that is as dark as you can make it with cold bluing.

Take it apart and use steel wool and CorrosionX to clean it up. CorrosionX has helped me recover various items that I would have thought were rusted beyond repair.

I remember when you posted photos of that gun here on GIM. You did a remarkable job on it!

I think that is as dark as you can make it with cold bluing.

Years ago, a "country" friend of mine had a method for cold bluing that always turned out incredibly deep and dark pieces using a cold bluing kit.

He took several cold bluing kits, added SALT and boiled them....While the formula from the kits was still hot, he added the piece he wanted to blue or he put on a set of yellow rubber gloves and coated the pieces that wouldn't immerse in the pan.. Once he did this several times, he would immediately dry and immerse in a high quality light oil and leave sit until they were cool..

The guns he had turned out exceptionally dark and blued colored. You would never know them from hot bluing with the exception of the faint smell which always gives cold bluing away.

It may be worth a try, especially on a small piece like a cheap revolver..

The bolt doesn't look too bad, it should clean up easily- use oiled 0000 steel wool, not dry. Even light rust on blued area will often clean up just with some LIGHT circular rubbing with oil and 4x wool. The key to using steel wool is the oil and gentle pressure. Get a exploded drawing and some detailed instructions for assembly/dis-assembly so you can get it back together correctly. Guns seem to come apart rather easily but not so going the other way. The bolt in the picture doesn't need blue-it was silver from the factory and is likely stainless or harder steel so won't easily take cold blue anyway. The rest of the gun doesn't look bad, If you do try to cold blue some parts, I have found warming them and the solution in the oven (low heat-150F) helps the blue work better. Or if there is some pitting, use some of Brownellls spray on finishes as you may never get it to look like factory. That would be a nice project gun to trick out.

It's amazing what you can do with just dry steel wool on a rusty barrel in two minutes. You won't believe it until you try it.

I've always had good luck removing light rust with steel wool and Blue Wonder gun cleaner.

http://www.bluewonder.us/

Most gun shops carry it or you can order from them also.

10/22's strip pretty easy, don't really need instructions. You can even easily remove the barrel with just an allen wrench to better get to the nooks. Don't try to disassemble the trigger group and you'll be fine.

Get a bore brush and clean the barrel too.

thanks Tom.
If I stay away from the trigger, there won't be any springs that I'll have trouble with?
I was worried about the Spring on the bolt.

Springs can be tricky when taking stuff apart.

Sure there is a bolt return spring but it's easy to control.

Re: rusty gun

the spring is attached to the charge handle. You just need to use a small screwdriver or something similar to move the spring back far enough to allow the bolt to drop back into place.

Youtube has been a decent resource for getting instructions on tear-down / assembly procedures.
